"Historically, relationships between law enforcement agencies and First Nations communities have been strained. Through the years a lot of effort has been made to improve that bond. This weekend, hundreds of paddlers gathered in Tofino to begin the Pulling Together Canoe Journey 2011.
The journey is a physical, cultural and spiritual trip. Since its inception in 2001, it has served an important role.
Its primary goal is to bring together First Nations youth and members of law enforcement. These groups will be pulling together to break down barriers and build relationships through meaningful communication. It is a way to put aside uniforms and histories that divide them and bring them together through a common experience.
It is about coming together, this year in the Nuu-chahnulth territory, and reaching a common understanding."
