The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians is making improvements at a controversial waste facility on the reservation.
The
Indian Health Service and the
Environmental Protection Agency have been raising concerns about the facility. It was built as a waste transfer station but began accepting municipal solid waste and other types of materials.
The IHS now says Chairman Merle St. Claire is taking steps to address weaknesses at the facility, whose manager recently resigned.
Employees will check incoming waste to ensure it can be properly disposed.
