United National Indian Tribal Youth celebrated its 35th anniversary on Friday.
J.R. Cook, a member of the
Cherokee Nation, started UNITY in 1976 to help Indian youth succeed. The group now has 150 youth councils in 35 states.
“It's sort of like we've only just begun,” Cook told members and alumni at the birthday celebration in Oklahoma City, The Oklahoman reported. “I feel confident about the organization because there are a lot of individuals throughout the country who are committed to seeing it grow.”
