RCMP's fatal shooting of First Nations man under investigation

The RCMP has called in an outside agency to investigate the fatal shooting of a man on the God's Lake First Nation in Manitoba.

Paul Leonard Duck, 52, was carrying a gun when he was shot twice by an RCMP officer on Tuesday. Relatives say he was trying to chase away teens who had gathered at the site of a fire on the reserve.

“There’s questions. Why’d it happen? Why did the police shoot him?” Duck’s brother-in-law Tony Trout told The Winnipeg Sun.

The shooting came after a fatal house fire claimed the lives of Demus James, 73, and two great-grandchildren -- Kaylene Okemow, 3, and Tron Kirkness, 1, on Monday. “The communities are actually very close-knit and when there’s tragedies — especially when it involves children — this is really painful,” Ron Evans, the grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, told the Sun.

The Saskatoon Police Service from Saskatchewan will investigate the shooting.
