BIA rejects federal recognition for factions from Juaneno Band

The Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a final determination that denied federal recognition to two factions of the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians of California.

The BIA issued two separate decisions. The agency said the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation (Petitioner #84A) and the the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians (Petitioner #84B) each failed to meet four of the seven mandatory criteria for recognition.

Since the BIA began reviewing petitions for federal recognition in 1978, no California tribe has successfully completed the process.
