Seattle mayor proclaims John T. Williams Day in honor of carver

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn proclaimed Sunday as John T. Williams Day.

John T. Williams was a member of the Dididaht First Nation of British Columbia who was fatally shot by a police officer on August 30, 2010. He would have turned 51 on Sunday.

"John T. Williams was a member of the Dididaht First Nation, a longtime Seattle resient and a master wood carver whose artistry was recognized locally and around the world," the proclamation states.

McGinn has agreed to set aside space for a totem that will honor Williams.
