Census Bureau maps new size of Oneida Reservation in New York

The U.S. Census Bureau says the Oneida Nation in New York has a 307,000-acre reservation.

In 2000, the agency said the reservation was 32 acres. But the tribe's land base grew significantly in a 2010 map.

“We engaged in consultations at the request of the United States about correcting the inaccurate reservation boundaries,” the tribe said in a statement, The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported.

The change in boundaries has worried two counties that are in trying to foreclose on the tribe's land. The U.S. Supreme Court was going to hear the case but instead directed the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider in light of tribal sovereign immunity issues.
