Abenaki tribes in Vermont seek recognition from state lawmakers
Thursday, January 20, 2011
Two Abenaki tribes in Vermont are in the final stages of the state recognition process.
The Nulhegan Band and the Elnu Band have been recommended for recognition by the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs. Now it's up to state lawmakers to approve or deny the tribes.
“This gives us our identity,” Nulhegan Chief Don Stevens said at a news conference, The Burlington Free Press reported.
Two additional Abenaki bands say they are hoping to complete the process.
