Several organizations are joining up to tackle diabetes and obesity on the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota. “Ambe, odaminodaa!” means "Come, Let's Play" in the Ojibwe language. The initiative includes a series of programs that will focus on healthy lifestyles, traditional foods and traditional games. “We really wanted to address nutrition in the community,” Susan Ninham, the project coordinator of the tribe's Statewide Health Improvement Program, told The Bemidji Pioneer. “We are trying to engage the community in understanding that nutrition and physical activity go hand-in-hand when reducing body weight.” Ninham said obesity and tobacco use, which contributes to diabetes, are prevalent on the reservation.
