Editorial: Ray Clark Littleturtle leaves the Lumbee Tribe stronger

"Ray Clark Littleturtle, the voice of the powwow for Lumbee Indians, died Monday at age 72. He will be missed for more than his smooth voice.

Not least, he will be remembered for his service to his larger "tribe" - the nation he served in Vietnam, returning with six Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and other decorations.

There was his service on the Tribal Council, the Lumbees' governing body, where he earned a reputation as both a listener and a doer. He was also a delegate to the state Commission of Indian Affairs, whose director cites Mr. Littleturtle's large legacy.

His strong voice was often among those lobbying in the nation's capital for the full federal recognition for which the tribe has waited so long. The same voice was heard in classrooms, passing along what he knew.

For his service, Mr. Littleturtle received recognition both state and national. But more than titles and honors, what made him a fixture in his tribe was his total immersion in its culture. This quote is from a fellow council member: "A lot of the time, he was very quiet. But when he did speak, people listened because of his knowledge.""
