Tribes discuss renewable energy and cultural resources at summit

Tribal leaders are meeting in Palm Springs, California, to discuss renewable energy and protection of cultural resources.

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, a federal agency, and the National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers are hosting the conference. Participants from the federal and tribal side said consultation was one of their biggest concerns.

“We need to work at all levels to improve our consultation” said Marcilynn Burke, a deputy director at the Bureau of Land Management, The Palm Springs Desert Sun reported.

Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Chairman Richard Milanovich gave the opening address. He said tribes have often been left out of the discussions when it comes to energy projects.“Without the work you do, who knows what would be happening in Indian Country with tribal — and aboriginal — resources?” Milanovich said, the paper reported.
