James Joseph, hereditary Sauk-Suiattle chief, passes away at 70

James Lawrence Joseph, the hereditary chief of the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe of Washington, died last Tuesday. He was 70.

Joseph, who also served as chairman of the tribe, was active in fishing and Indian child welfare issues. He also helped create the Northwest Intertribal Court System.

“My uncle did not think he was better than anybody else, but he led by example,” his nephew Jason Joseph told The Everett Herald. “He was a good speaker. He had a level head and a good heart.”

Funeral services take place today.
