Elected officials of the
Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma are due for an 11 percent increase in salary over the next four years.
A citizen committee has recommended the increase, a council member said. If adopted, council members will receive about $50,000 per year, up from the current annual salary of $36,000.
"Money should not be the motivation for this job," Tina Glory-Jordan said during a discussion on the salary increase, The Tahlequah Daily Press reported.
The council passed legislation that will allow the committee's recommendations to go into effect unless the council passes a bill that explicitly rejects the recommendations.
