Rep. Young plans to address energy and economic development
Wednesday, January 12, 2011
Rep. Don Young
(R-Alaska) plans to address energy and economic development in his new leadership role on the
House Natural Resources Committee
.
Young, the chairman of the newly created
Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs
, believes federal laws and regulations are holding back tribes and Alaska Natives. "They have not been adequately served by the federal government when it comes to trying to encourage their advancement," Young said in an interview with E&E Daily. "They've been deprived of developing their lands if they wish to do so."
He singled out the
Endangered Species Act
and agencies at the
Interior Department
as hindrances to tribal development. "We have so many people involved in these offices, and really, what are they doing? They are implementing regulatory law that is not voted upon that determines how people live," Young said.
