Two counties start foreclosure proceedings against Cayuga Nation

Two New York counties have initiated foreclosure proceedings against the Cayuga Nation.

Seneca County and Cayuga County say the tribe owes more than $60,000 in property taxes. They say a case before the U.S. Supreme Court involving another New York tribe will support their effort.

On February 23, the high court will hear Madison County v. Oneida Indian Nation. The court will determine whether Madison County can foreclose on properties owned by the Oneida Nation.

"Our advice to the counties was to see how the supreme court rules,” Cayuga Nation attorney Dan French told The Auburn Citizen. “We could save legal fees if we wait to see what they say.”
