Fred Paquin, the former police chief for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Michigan, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for defrauding the federal government.

Paquin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States by dishonest means. In addition to prison time, he was ordered to pay $231,785.03 in restitution.

According to federal prosecutors, Paquin used his position as police chief and as a member of the tribe's board of directors to misuse grants from the Department of Justice. He created a "slush fund" that he used for his own purposes, prosecutors said.
