The Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma held its annual elder payment ceremony on Thursday.
Every tribal member over the age of 65 is eligible for a $500 check, a frozen turkey, a blanket and a gift bag. About 30 elders attended the event.
"This is a reward to our elders for their longevity and service to our tribe," Chairman Ron Twohatchet told The Tulsa World. "Our members often come home for different reasons. This is our opportunity to come to them."
The tribe will hold more meetings to distribute checks and gifts. About 750 tribal members are eligible for the payment.
