Ute Tribe concerned about state encroachment on the reservation
The Ute Tribe of Utah wants to meet with federal authorities to address concerns about state jurisdiction on the reservation.

In Hagen v. Utah, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Uintah and Ouray Reservation was diminished by act of Congress. The decision led to a law enforcement agreement between the tribe, the state and two counties but one county has failed to renew the agreement, leaving tribal leaders worried about state encroachments.

"As far as we were concerned we didn't want any intrusion from any outside entities, such as the state, on the reservation," Stewart Pike, a member of the tribal business committee, told The Deseret News.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah plans to meet with the tribe to address jurisdiction issues.
