A police officer from the Round Valley Indian Tribes of California was assaulted during what started out as a routine traffic stop.
Will Vanderheiden stopped Arthur Gutierrez Gonzales, 36, on suspicion of drunken driving last Friday morning.
Gonzales punched and kicked Vanderheiden, who was unable to subdue Gonzales with pepper spray.
Backup from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office arrived as Vanderheiden retreated to a safe location. Gonzales was eventually subdued after being Taserered. At some point, Gonzales is suspected of killing five puppies inside a residence.
Gonzales has been charged with violating parole, vandalism and resisting arrest. He may face other charges as the investigation continues.
