Ryan Sundberg will be the first Native American on the Board of Supervisors in Humboldt County, California.
Sundberg, who is of Yurok ancestry, won the election by just 142 votes. An analysis by The Eureka Times-Standard showed that voters from the Yurok Reservation, the Hoopa Valley Reservation and the Trinidad Rancheria propelled him to victory.
"I just like him because we are finally getting a Native American on as a district supervisor,” Margaret Dickson, a council member for the Hoopa Valley Tribe, told the paper. “That was why I went out and campaigned for him.”
Sundberg has served on the council at the Trinidad Rancheria for 14 years.
