Two brothers await sentencing for kidnapping and beating a man from the Navajo Nation.
Jose Garcia and Joshua Garcia pleaded guilty to charges of kidnapping and armed robbery. They admitted they offered a ride to Leroy Thompson, 38, in order to take his money.
Jose Garcia, the older brother, wanted to "punk a Nav," another man who witnessed the attack told police, The Farmington Daily Times reported.
"I don't know what that means but presumably it meant to roll a Native American' and since that is in fact what they did, then that is probably what it means," San Juan County Chief Deputy District Attorney Dustin O'Brien said in court, the paper reported.
Despite the racial nature of the incident, the brothers are not charged with hate crimes. Jose Garcia is due to be sentenced December 15 but Jose Garcia's sentencing has been delayed so he can undergo a psychological evaulation.
