A California man who pleaded guilty to illegally excavating an ancestral village
of the Yurok Tribe failed to turn up for a restitution hearing.
James Edward Truhls was given a lenient sentence for his crime --
30 days in jail, 60 hours of community service and a $530 fine.
But he has apparently failed to complete his community service and has yet to pay an estimated $14,000 in restitution.
”This is an on-going issue that we've seen happen all over Humboldt and Del Norte counties,” Yurok spokesperson Matt Mais told The Eureka Times-Standard. “We're looking for the most substantial restitution the judge can award.”
Truhls was arrested after he posted a YouTube video of himself digging
in Patrick's Point
State Park. Authorities found a collection of artifacts he had taken from
the site at his home.
