A rare photograph of Chief Manuelito, one of the leaders of the Navajo Nation, is being published for the first time.

An archivist for the Museum of New Mexico came across the photo earlier this year. It's one of the few known of Manuelito, who helped the Navajo establish their reservation following the Long Walk of 1868.

The photo shows Chief Manuelito seated next to Cayetanito, another Navajo leader. Besides resisting the U.S. government, Manuelito is known for his stature -- he was said to have been more than 6 feet tall and to have weighed more than 200 pounds.

The photo is believed to have been taken in the 1870s, most likely in New Mexico. It was taken by Henry Hiester.

The photo appears in El Palacio, the magazine of the Museum of New Mexico.
