Members of the Ute Tribe of Utah are hoping President Barack Obama will help them recover their ancestral lands.
The tribe resides on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. But another 2 million acres that was set aside for the Utes remains in dispute.
“We haven’t relinquished anything,” tribal member Ronald Yellowbird told The Vernal Express. “There’s been no disestablishment. We are tied to the land and that’s where the spirit of the people belongs.”
The state courts have ruled that the 2 million acres at issue were diminished through the allotment process. A Bureau of Indian Affairs said the tribe would have to ask Congress to restore the land.
