Purcell Powless, a former chairman of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, was laid to rest on Monday. He died on November 5 at the age of 84.
Powless led the tribe from 1967 to 1990. He was hailed a visionary who brought prosperity and opportunity to his people.
"All of these people that he raised and helped and taught, we all have to do what he did. I think there's a bright future ahead because of Purcell Powless but it's on our shoulders now," said nephew Ernie Stevens Jr., the chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association, WLUK-TV reported.
Powless served in World War II and was a steelworker who helped build the Mackinaw Bridge and the original Sears Tower.
