Two coal-fired power plants on the Navajo Nation rank among the largest polluters in the U.S.

The Four Corners Power Plant ranks number one while the Navajo Generating Station ranks number 4. The Environmental Protection Agency says the facilities emit nitrogen oxides that lead to asthma attacks, bronchitis, heart attacks and premature deaths.

The EPA has ordered the Four Corners Power Plant, located in New Mexico, to install $717 million in emission control equipment. Similar changes might be required at the Navajo Generating Station in Arizona.

The facilities have been a steady source of income for the tribe but revenues have dropped in recent years.
