Anthony Valella, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, is running as an indepdent for the South Dakota Senate.
Valella wants to represent District 35, which includes Rapid City. He is currently a student at Oglala Lakota College.
“I’ve been knocked down a few times in my life, but I continue to get back up,” Valella told The Rapid City Journal. “I’ve slept underneath bridges, I’ve slept in the park, I’ve had to travel by bus. But I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for those things.”
Valella is challenging incumbent Jeff Haverly, a Republican.
