Members of the Round Valley Indian Tribes of California are allowed to grow 33 marijuana plants, The Ukiah Daily Journal reports.
As a result, tribal members have plants growing in their yards. Some of them are teaming up with the Mexican Mafia, according to tribal police chief Carlos Rabano.
"Typically, Hispanic workers get the gardens started for them (tribal members), and they'll often want half of the garden, or they'll give the member a car," Rabano told the paper.
Rabano said federal law bars the cultivation of marijuana in Indian Country but he tries not to interfere with tribal members' yards. However, local authorities are cracking down on marijuana farms in the region.
