The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is asking the Canadian government to exempt Native people from the gun registry.
Some treaties guarantee hunting rights and provide First Nations with access to ammunition. The gun registry violates the treaties, FSIN said.
"Part of our livelihood and sustenance is hunting and gathering and we are covered under the treaties for that," FSIN vice-chief Lyle Whitefish told The Saskatchewan News Network.
"We need firearms to carry out our practices."
Politicians have been debating bills to end the registry.
