A young man and woman were sentenced to federal prison for a hate crime attack on an Alaska Native man.
Robert Gum, 19, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, and Deanna Scaglione, 21, also known as Deanna Powers, was sentenced to 16 months, The Anchorage Daily News reported. Both received three years of probation, the paper said.
Gum and Scaglione admitted they violated Eddie Barr's civil rights. They threw eggs and objects at him, pushed him, kicked him and yelled racial slurs at him on the streets of Anchorage in the early morning hours of July 28, 2009.
"Hey, dog, you want to get shot?" Gum said, according to a video of the account
that the couple posted on YouTube. He also said: "We'll hit
this (racial slur) with a bat," and "You are dumb, you're a f--ing Native."
Gum and Scaglione also admitted they targeted two other Natives on the night in question.
