Officials in Whatcom
County, Washington, are asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs for assistance in negotiating with the Lummi Nation.
The tribe presented what it said was a final offer for the Lummi
Island ferry. The tribe owns the land where the ferry dock is located.
A county official said the tribe might be willing to come back to the table. Residents are worried the the ferry costs will rise once a deal is made.
The tribe's last offer was $310,000 a year for a 35-year lease. The offer also requires the county to pay $4 million for a future tribal marina.
