Two brothers-in-law have filed to run for president of the Seneca Nation of New York.
Rod Pierce, a tribal council member, and Robert Odawi Porter, an attorney who has served as the tribe's counsel, are the first to throw their hats in the ring.
The election will be held this November.
“Rob and I were family before, and we’ll still be family after the election,” Pierce, whose sister is married to Porter, told The Buffalo News. “Family comes first, before politics.”
Seneca presidents serve two-year terms and the tribe rotates among candidates from its Cattaraugus and Allegany reservations. Pierce and Porter are from Allegany.
