Mayan groups are calling on a city in Mexico to take down a monument to Spanish conquistadores.who led massacres in the 1500s.
The monument to Francisco de Montejo and his son was erected in June. The Montejos were responsible for bloody battles in the Yucatan between 1528 and 1546, the Associated Press reported.
"This represents an insult for the Maya nation," Artemio Kaamal of Kuxa'an'on told the AP. Kuxa'an'on means "We are Alive" in Maya.
Officials in Merida said they would consider the request.
