The Rosebud Sioux
Tribe of South Dakota asked the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, a domestic violence shelter on the reservation, to meet certain conditions in order to continue to receive pass-through grants.
The tribe suspended funding to the shelter last month after complaints by former clients. The shelter agreed to establish a written grievance system, to produce monthly financial reports, to undergo a building inspection and to consider becoming a tribal entity.
“I sat on my hands and listened and observed,” executive director Tillie Black Bear told The Rapid City Journal. “The board of directors from the Buffalo Calf really stepped to the plate.”
