The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota will use $42 million in self-determination funds to build a justice center on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The Pine Ridge Justice Center will house the tribal court, a juvenile and adult detention facility and offices for tribal law enforcement. “It’s kind of like a one-stop shopping place,” Roxanne Two Bulls, a tribal grants and contracts manager, told The Rapid City Journal.

Two Bulls said the tribe negotiated with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to fund the facility. Groundbreaking is expected later this month.

The existing detention facility on the reservation has consistently been rated as overcrowded in annual Department of Justice reports.
