The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts will be getting its first Indian Health Service facility since gaining federal recognition.
The $675,000 center will consist of an an administration building and a 4,800-square-foot health clinic. It's being built on land next to tribal headquarters in the town of Mashpee.
Tribal council member Cheryl Frye-Cromwell said the IHS will pay to run the center for the next three to five years. After that, she said the tribe will take over operations.
The tribe has a pending land-into-trust application for property it owns in Mashpee. It wasn't reported whether the IHS will be located on tribal land or other property.
