In 2006, 17 people filed to run for chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara
Nation of North Dakota, The Bismarck Tribune reports.
This year, only two people have filed: incumbent chairman Marcus Levings and former chairman Tex Hall. The deadline is August 10 so it's possible more candidates might emerge.
Levings defeated Hall in 2006. Hall was seeking a third term in office.
Earlier this month, Levings backed out of his re-election bid. But he jumped back into the race after he said elders urged him to run.
Hall s wasn't planning on running either but he said he was motivated by others to get involved.
