The Yankton Sioux Tribe will be observing David Garcia Day on Friday in honor of a teen who died of cancer in August 2007.
David Garcia was diagnosed with acute leukemia when he was 7. He succumbed to the disease when he was 16 years old.
“He had a real strong spirit,” his older brother, Rafael Garcia, 31, told The Mitchell Daily Republic. “He was always happy. … We always called him, ‘our gift.’ He taught us a lot.”
The city of Lake Andes first proclaimed July 29 as David Garcia Day four years ago, the paper said. Rafael Garcia organized a walk to benefit the American Cancer Society as part of the day.
