Heather Kendall-Miller, an Athabascan attorney who works for the Native American Rights Fund, is under consideration for a spot on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, The Recorder reports.
If nominated by President Barack Obama, Kendall-Miller would be the first Native American to serve on a federal appellate court. The 9th Circuit hears a large number of cases affecting tribes, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians in nine states..
Kendall-Miller, who attended law school with Obama, isn't the only Native American under consideration for the federal judiciary. Keith Harper, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, could be nominated to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.
