The Viejas Band of
Kumeyaay Indians of California is headed back to court on Friday over a water project at a sacred site.
The tribe won an injunction to halt construction of a $20 million reservoir. Ancestors and artifacts have been discovered at the site, which is home to a recently-unearthed Kumeyaay burial and ceremonial ground.
The Padre Dam Municipal Water
District says it has consulted the tribe about the project. But the manager described the tribal remains as just a few bone fragments and disputed whether the site was a burial ground.
The California Native American Heritage Commission has designated the area as a sanctified cemetery. The state is siding with the tribe in the case.
