Tule River Tribe of
California won support from the city of Porterville for a land-into-trust application.
The application is for 40 acres near the Porterville Airport. The tribe hasn't said what it plans to do with the property but officials noted that the city recently signed an agreement to cooperate with the tribe.
“It’s an arduous process we’ve gone through to get to this point,” Tribal Administrator Sam Cohen said at a council meeting, The Porterville Recorder reported.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs has released an environmental assessment for the acquisition. Comments are due July 26.
The city opposed two of the tribe's prior applications, the paper said.
