The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Michigan opened its first smoke-free housing development on Monday.
The four duplex units will house eight families. The tribe said they are the first smoke-free Indian housing units in Michigan and only the fifth of their kind in Indian Country.
“Providing a healthy living environment for Tribal members is our main goal,” Sault Tribe Housing Director Joni Talentino said in a press release. “We want to give our members the opportunity to join the nationwide movement toward becoming smoke free.”
The tribe plans to include smoke-free units in future housing projects.
