The Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona said it will reconsider its relationship with the Tucson Unified School District after the closure of yet another school.
The Richey Elementary primarily served tribal members. But with only about 90 students, school board members said it wasn't financially viable to keep it open.
Two school board members who voted against the closure wanted to form a partnership with the tribe. They wanted to keep the school open another year while the tribe secured financial support.
Tribal students will now have to be bussed to another school in the district or seek an education elsewhere. "I'm very sad," said parent Ernette Leslie-John, who plans to enroll her daughter out of the district, The Arizona Daily Star reported. "We had expectations that the district would try to work with us to keep Richey open."
