A small community on the Navajo Nation is hosting training sessions and other events in hopes of preventing youth suicide.
Five youth between the ages of 13 and 16 took their lives between March and May. Tribal, local and federal officials have been working to help the Thoreau Chapter pull the community together.
"Every family that (survived) a death needs to be counseled and led through the healing process," Selena Manychildren, a spokeswoman for the Navajo Nation Division of Health, told The Farmington Daily Times. "We need to put emphasis on healing so people are inspired."
The tribe declared an emergency in the Eastern Navajo Agency.to assist the Thoreau Chapter in securing federal funds, Manychildren said.
