Dozens of local and state officers responded to the fatal shooting of a man on the Soboba Reservation in California, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.
William Dusty Rhodes, a 21-year-old tribal member, was pronounced dead on the scene on Saturday night. A large crowd had gathered by the victim, prompting a request for more backup.
"While it turns out that such a large show of force was not needed, the tribe's government understands the call for exercising caution to be sure that sufficient, as opposed to not enough, assistance is provided," tribal spokesperson Mike Hiles said in a statement to the paper. "What is most important here is that a very communicative and mutually respectful relationship has evolved between the tribe and local law enforcement charged with responding to such occurrences."
In the summer of 2008, deputies from the Riverside County
Sheriff's Department were involved in the fatal shootings of three tribal members.
