A judge with the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma says the tribe must redraw its council districts.
Judge Bart Fite said the tribe's nine districts should be drawn up based on zip code. Currently, the districts are based on the number of Cherokees living in a particular area.
Fite ordered the Cherokee Nation Election Commission to draw up a new map by June 30. But the tribal council opposes the decision and voted to ask for a reconsideration or clarification, The Muskogee Phoenix reported.
Basing districts on zip code will allow Cherokees who do not live within the tribe's 14-county area to participate in elections, according to council members.
