The Department of Labor announced $67 million in tribal workforce grants.
About $53 million was awarded to 178 tribes and tribal organizations to provide employment and training services for American Indians and Alaska Natives ages 14 and older.
The remaining $14 million will go to 78 tribes, tribal organizations and Native Hawaiian groups to provide summer and year-round employment and training activities for Native youth.
"Funding awarded through this competition will support American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities in both the development of their local economies and the preparation of workers to meet the needs of promising regional industries," Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said in a press release. "The training and employment services made available through these grants will expand opportunities for adults and at-risk youth in these communities and will help them gain access to the kind of good jobs that offer opportunities for advancement."
The grants were awarded under the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. Section 166 of the law established an Indian and Native American Program.
