The Cherokee Nation council passed a resolution in support of Keith Harper for a spot on the 10th Circuit Court of
Appeals.
Harper, a tribal member, is reportedly under consideration for the post but President Barack Obama has not made a decision.
Tribal leaders say he will be a wise choice for the court, which hears a significant number of Indian law cases from Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.
"He would be the first Native American to serve on an appellate court,” said Council Speaker Meredith Frailey, The Tahlequah Daily Press reported. “He has a vast amount of experience advocating for Native Americans. Harper is stellar candidate and his credentials are outstanding.”
Harper has represented the plaintiffs in the Indian trust fund
lawsuit since it was filed in 1996.
