A Navajo Nation woman who serves on the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission won't serve jail time on felony charges.
Carol Sloan, a Democrat, was found guilty of aggravated battery and aggravated burglary. Prosecutors say she attacked another woman, Brenda Yazzie, in an incident off the reservation.
Sloan was sentenced to five years but the judge said she didn't have to go to jail. She was ordered to remain on supervised probation for five years and to pay $3,500 in fines and court costs.
Sloan, who plans to appeal her conviction, intends to serve the remainder of her time on the commission although Attorney General Gary King wants her removed immediately. State law prevents her from being elected again because she is a felon.
Sloan's district includes parts of the Navajo Nation.
