Sue Shaffer has been removed from her paid position as a consultant for the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians of Oregon but will continue to serve as chairwoman.
Shaffer, 87, held the consultant position since 1995 until she was removed earlier this month. "I got canned," the chairwoman told The Roseburg News-Review.
The tribe hasn't stated publicly why it removed Shaffer. She blamed three board members for orchestrating the move.
Shaffer has served as elected chairwoman of the tribe for more than 30 years. She was largely responsible for securing the tribe's federal recognition in 1982.
